Japanese dragon tattoo

Here’s a short video of some tattooing done at Tabernacle tattoo by Zenon Pawelski. on this type of layout the video seemed to help the tattoo translate in a better perceptive. Composition is just as important as the drawings them self at times. We stenciled the major components and have drawn the rest together this tattoo was done in 16 hours with four sessions to complete.

The Hell Scrolls Research Project

Kyosai was an artist in Japanese history born in 1831, his artwork has influenced tattooing and many aspects of Japanese traditional tattoos specifically.  He is most well know for his eccentrically crafted paintings.  His talents were renowned throughout Japan during his most prominent days especially as a satirist, targeting the Japanese police force and other aspects of the government with his work.  He received multiple jail sentences and countless lashings as a result of his persistence. Kyosai was a total outlaw in his time and a true inspiration. He has a ton of work that has influenced tattooing for over a century most of which got him at least a few lashings for his creativity.

In a previous post we discussed the dynamic of an artist Hokusai and his studies, Kyosai studied the art work a great deal which turned out to be a great influence on him and his craft.  This probably one of the primary reasons his artwork generates so much movement and visual impact. Kyosai was not a student of Hokusai however, he is considered as one of his greatest successors.

By the time his life was winding down he was noted for his eclectic nature and exuberance in all facets of his life.  He had created hundreds of publications, comics, Shunga, artwork, drawing etc all of which had significant influence in art and tattooing. The Hell Scrolls is a personal favorite collection of imagery and worth checking out. It is a dynamic depiction of the creatures and layers of hell that holds a lot of meaning in Japanese culture.  Yomi, or Japanese land of the dead, is an exciting environment full of fire, torture and extreme pain for eternity.  Crows with lava hot beaks eat you skin of and and the forrest leaves are blades, these are just a few of the terrors that await.  Kyosai’s imagination was wild and fantastic, he was able to depict many amazing Japanese legends and creatures of folk lore so powerfully that it captivated Japan. As the western world moved in and began trading with Japan they were even intrigued by his creations and power images.

Timeless images have influenced tattooing specifically traditional Japanese tattooing for hundreds of years. Because of Kyosai, Hokusai and many other artists we have lifetimes worth of tattoo reference.

Tampa tattoo shop

It is always interesting to meet the new faces and to see the new people that come to our tattoo shop tucked away in Historic Ybor City.  Tampa has a rich history of tattoos and culture as well as many great artists in one area but we feel like there is some magic in this shop. People from all over Tampa, Florida, the United States and the world have walked through these doors. It is always interesting to hear how people found the shop, sometimes its as easy as searching “tattoo shop near me” or driving by, some others have literally been on the journey, seeing a sticker in town and matching the image to its originator.  All of it is a testament to the quality product we put out here everyday (If you haven’t checked out one of our galleries feel free to do so). In some ways its like going on a quest we are off the main path but still very visible, the two cobras on the wall are your proverbial “X marks the spot”.

The Quest for the treasure chest is important sometimes because it brings a sense of value and meaning in a world where instant gratification reigns supreme. As the saying goes you have to trust the process. We all want something now or not have to leave our homes because we can just go on the internet and order our groceries and clothes and have it shipped to our house in a day.  However, groceries get eaten or go bad, clothes go out of style, but tattoos should be built to last. So is it reasonable for an individual to find the instant tattoo close by or do the research? We are happy that a lot if not all of our clients come with awesome tattoo ideas and tattoo reference to give us an idea of what they are thinking and what they like so we can create a bullet proof custom tattoo for them.  We appreciate all the ideas and research so much because it shows us that our clients want a quality product and care about tattoos built to last.

We explain the process throughly and are prepared to answer any and all questions that may arise to establish a trustworthy relationship between client and tattooer. We feel this is one of the most important steps on the quest. It allows us to increase our knowledge, study and put a lot of research into a tattoo for our client.  This is not just limited to the big pieces, our walk-in’s and appointments that want smaller work get the same level of detail and attention to their tattoos.  It is important that every tattoo that comes through Tabernacle Tattoo is treated with a great deal of care and hard work.  With the principles we truly feel we can set ourselves apart from the pack and offer our clients the best level of tattooing possible.

As always thank you for reading our blog hopefully this gives you some insight at the process. If you have any questions or want to discuss ideas for your next tattoo, please feel free to stop by the shop or reach out to our contact us page we would love to talk to you!!!!

Making Waves

We’re looking to change the game! You might be asking yourself, “what do they mean by change the game?”

We want to change the game by conducting these incredible studies and educating individuals, clients, customers, friends, family etc on the process and research this craft of tattooing needs in order to successfully go into the future. Take the featured image “The Great Wave” by Hokusai, for example, this is easily the most recognized piece of Japanese artwork on the planet.  More specifically titled “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” depicts a large wave headed for Kanagawa, Japan.  The imagery makes for an incredible tattoo that will stand the test of time. Why is this piece of art still so relevant in the art world and tattooing? Some would say it is easily readable by the eye, it is aesthetically pleasing, there are a hundred reasons this piece of art is so incredible.  But how we see it here at the tattoo shop, Hokusai did his research, he dedicated his life to his craft, he was a ukiyo-e (wood block) painter almost since birth.  He drew many waves, essentially conducting studies the mechanics of the wave and his work paid off. He was one of the most popular artists in Japan during his peak years because of his incredible work ethic and dedication.

With that being said, this is our life! Tattooing is everything and it reflects in our work. Tampa Florida has many great tattooers and has always been a hot area for the hits! We are here to set ourselves apart to our clients because were here to win, make amazing, elegant, thoughtful tattoos and provide the best service possible. Check out our work we would love to meet you and discuss any ideas you may have!

Cool Video of a Tough Dragon Tattoo Rendering (Must Watch)

I wanted to have some fun today and just discuss the hits.  This is a classic image of a Dragon done here at Tabernacle Tattoo. This was a fun one and now you can see the process in a time laps.  We study the materials and put in the work to make a proper tattoo here at the shop.  Theres only one way to generate consistent material as long as we have and that is to study and put in the work to make it HOT!!! As classic and fun as this image is, we are not limited to Japanese tattoos we offer an extremely wide variety of tattoo styles and concepts for our clients.  This study is part of the usual process that goes into each and every custom tattoo here at the tattoo shop.  The finer details and tricks are extremely important to a quality final product which is both beneficial to the client and the tattooer. Recent Adventures

We have been hitting the circuit hard recently our travels have reunited us with old friends and introduced us to some new ones as well.  Traveling to conventions is always fun and full of neat experiences.  On our travels to the Villain Arts Philadelphia tattoo convention, the weekend of February 9th 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles had just won the Super Bowl and the city was a giant party.  There were so many people in town for the Championship parade which only added to the experiences at the convention and added quite a bit of diversity to the mix, which allowed us to educate people new to tattooing on our process and studies.  Many individuals at the convention were looking for Japanese and traditional tattoos which was really cool because we could talk about the classic imagery that has made tattooing last for centuries. As with many tattoo conventions many people come through with new ideas and concepts which gave us the opportunity to learn about the newest trends in tattooing.  This reinforces concepts in previous blogs, the world of custom tattooing is a forever evolving field and this tattoo convention gave us the opportunity to reach out to a new as well as experienced audience. Our tattoo adventure culminated in Philadelphia, but our journey included a few stops to visit with some great tattooers and friends.

We started our travels from Ybor city, FL and our first stop was to see our good friend Glen Collins of Broken Lantern tattoo in Charleston, SC.  Charleston is a beautiful town that always treats us well.  Next we stopped in to see a former coworker and now owner of Salt Water Tattoo in Virginia Beach, Mike Rickards.  We used to work together at Ancient Arts Tattoo owned by J.D. Crowe.  Finally, we met up with the illusive Mike Sikes of Eye Speak in Fairfax, VA to catch up for a little bit before heading into Philadelphia and our final destination.

Thank you for reading our post and please feel free to say Hi on the contacts page     if you have any questions or would like to discuss your next tattoo

Traditional Japanese Hannya Mask

He’s big and he’s scary looking, but never judge a mask by it’s leering mouth. Traditionally Hannya masks were used in many “noh”(Japanese Plays) to represent the souls of women who have become demons due to obsession and jealousy. These “demons” can be demonic and dangerous, but they are truly tormented and full of sorrow. They’ve also been depicted as being serpent like, so here in this tattoo I’ve incorporated a snake wrapping itself around the mask.
Traditional Japanese creatures; the dragon, tiger, the kitsune (fox), Hannya Masks, snakes, foo dogs, food myoos, plus many many more are what I’m about and what I’ve loved tattooing and had the pleasure of delving a bit into their legends.

Japanese Tiger Body Suit Painting

One of the many perks about what I do is being able to travel and meet all kinds of interesting people within this industry. This painting here was done for a man, the man, Clay Decker from True Tattoo in Hollywood California. It’s a body suit with a Traditional Japanese motif going on. You got the cherry blossoms, wind bars, finger waves and last but definitely not least, the mighty Tiger. Very fun piece I had the pleasure of doing.
